The plate was removed from the first edition of Das illustrirte Mississippithal, which Streeter called "the great early color plate book of the Mississippi region." The image showcases Alton's bustling riverfront and depicts a steam paddleboat, buildings, streets, horses, and people with clarity. The vibrant colors capture the natural beauty of the river valley and the charm of the town. This rare and visually stunning work offers a unique historical perspective on the Mississippi region and its development in the mid-nineteenth century.--Edited description of Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps.University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Librarytag:digital.library.illinois.edu,2005:Item/7657662021-10-26T16:53:09Z2023-08-24T22:56:05ZChicago harbor & bar, Illinois. : from survey made in April, 1857, under the direction of Brevet Lieut. Magnus was perhaps the most prolific publisher of maps, aerial views, and other graphic materials related to the Civil War, and the present work is notable for the inclusion of a great number of forts and other sites related to the war. Its remarkable range of detail includes towns both small and large, plantations, country markets, trading posts, schools and colleges, churches, industrial sites, landmarks, roads and railroads. By the time this map was published, the Mississippi (except for Vicksburg and Port Hudson) was under Union control. Magnus, through various political connections, became one of the few illustrators with unrestricted access to Union military camps, which also accounts in large part for his dominance of the market in Civil War graphic materials. Therefore, it's likely that the fine-grained detail of this work resulted from his access to information gathered by Union personnel. After the war, Magnus continued a prosperous business in both the creation and selling of panoramic city views, song sheets, and patriotic envelopes. With over 1,000 known works to his credit, Magnus was one of the most prolific American printers of broadsides and other lithographs].--Edited description Martayan Lan website.University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Librarytag:digital.library.illinois.edu,2005:Item/6327972021-05-27T13:26:54Z2023-08-24T22:56:05ZOhio River between Mound City and Cairo / surveyed by the party of F.H.
