W. French, July 30, 1863.    Camo near Black River July zoth, LE6a. =    _My Dear Aunt Sarah?   On the gud of July while in Div. Hosp. I rect yours  dated June gerd which would have been replied to had I remained  where I was at that time—-but instead I was ordered to rejoin  my regt. on the 4th immediately after the surrender, and ac-  company it on the expedition against Johnston. On that  march there was little time or  and most of the time no communication open with the rest of  mankind. As Col. Judy starts for home today or tomorrow on  a leave of absence I will send this by him—-nor will I spend  much time in detailing the incidents of the trip as he will  call on you and can relate much better than I can write.   My health is much better than it was when I  tho' I came near breaking my neck day before yesterday, and  consequently feel pretty sore and stiff to day. I got the  prettiest and best pony in the regt a few days since--very wild  tho' and coming up a steep embankment in this treacherous country  pony and I fell about twenty feet. He was confiscated by one  of the boys and I paid $20— for him.   Dr. Willson Asst. Surgeon in this regt. has resigned and  it has been accepted. Gol. Judy announced to me the morning  after the last days fight at Jackson that he should immediately  forward recommendations for my appointment to the vacancy. I    do not know exactly the status of my case at the State Dept.
