Letter from James Anthony Froude to Thomas Carlyle, January 28, 1877
Creator
Froude, James Anthony, 1818-1894
Date
1877-01-28
Description
One written copy of a letter from English writer and editor of Fraser's Magazine, James Anthony Froude to British essayist Thomas Carlyle, regarding the business of Fraser's Magazine. Froude writes that Thomas Longman has never liked William Allingham, and dislikes Allingham as editor of the magazine. Froude tells Carlyle that he would not take the editorship from Allingham, and recalls that he originally gave Allingham the position of sub-editor because he thought that Carlyle and Tennyson wished for him to be employed. Froude also mentions doubling Allingham's salary out of his own pocket, and that he got Allingham appointed to head editor. He states that he would rather return as editor of the magazine then it be sold or under another editor. Froude concludes his letter by stating that he believed Carlyle should be aware of what is happening. The letter is accompanied by notes, possibly written by Allingham, which states that Froude's use of his own money to pay Allingham is false.
