  • Three chapters (231-233) are listed in the index but do not appear in the manuscript; at the end of chapter 230, the scribe adds "& sara fatto. finis con gratia [...] Letor se qualche cosa mal scrita nouarij non imputar me; ma loriginal ce tal gual'o ritrovato tal o scritto"
  • Binding: Bound in washed vellum with remnants of ties; title in ink on spine with the number "4"; liturgical manuscript fragments (Bible, Book of Daniel, 13th century) used as spine lining. Housed in modern quarter leather and green marbled paper chemise, in similar leather and green marbled paper slipcase
  • Chapter numbers added in a later hand starting with 93
  • Paper: Laid paper; unidentified watermarks (miniscule 'm' or yoke?) on 12 leaves
  • Decoration: Decorated 5-line initial on f. 1 styled as a tree trunk; 2- to 3-line red pen initials at the beginning of each chapter; chapter headings in red in the same hand as the main text; occasional pen flourishes

  • 16th-century manuscript of the signs of health and illness in horses and the causes and cures of their diseases, Lorenzo Rusio's treatise on veterinary science for horses, likely written around 1302-1306. The treatise was translated from Latin into Italian by Antonio de Berulo or Barletta before or around 1422, and, according to the preface, is divided into 6 sections: 1. Horses' breeding and birthing (chs. 1-21); 2. rearing horses and caring for them (chs. 22-39); 3. recognizing their beauty (ch. 4?); 4. their health and maintenance (chs. 40-46); 5. on their sickness and medicinal remedies for them (chs. 47-195); and 6. various medicinal syrups and salves (chs. 196-234). The manuscript's size and long lines indicate that it was used as a reference copy rather than for practical use. In 234 chapters, 40 of which are added to the original text on the preparation and application of medicines for horses; chapters 231-233 are listed in the index, however the text ends with chapter 230. With a table of Latin and vernacular names for plants and herbs (ch. 234). The volume appears to be one of five extant Italian translations by Barletta (British Library, Add. MS 22824; Parma, MS 315; Pavia, MS Ald. 532; and Bologna, MS A. 1586)
Biographical Note
Laurentius Rusius or Lorenzo Rusio (1288-1347) was a friar, veterinarian, and farrier practicing chiefly in Rome. His treatise on the treatment of horses was based on ancient Greek and Byzantine texts commonly known as the Hippiatrica. Chief among these was a work by the 4th century military veterinarian Apsyrtus, whose work established many of the infectious diseases suffered by horses. Rusio's work was first printed circa 1489 in Speyer, Germany, under the title Liber Marescalciae equorum (the book of the stabling of horses).
