Detail of an 8" x 10" photograph made by Alexander Gardner of the second inauguration of President Lincoln on March 4, 1865. The President is reading from his manuscript. Mr. Nicolay, one of his secretaries, is standing behind the empty chair. Vice President Johnson's face is hidden by the hat held in his left hand.
