Date

Description
One letter from English classical and Shakespearean scholar William George Clark to William Allingham with accompanying page from a book of Shakespeare, page titled "The Cast from The Face of Shakespeare After Death, 1616," describing the finding of the death-mask of Shakespeare by a Dr. Becker, and then studied by Professor Owen from Cambridge. In the letter, Clark tells Allingham he said gone to see the mask, and discusses the miniature as described by Owen. Clark also shares the history of the mask in Cologne. Clark shares that he has strong doubts as the details of the mask differ from the Chandos portrait. He also theorizes that if the mask is not of Shakespeare, the only other "laureate" that died in 1616 was Cervantes, and the mask could share similarities with an engraving in a specific edition of Don Quixote. Clark also shares his address for the coming month at Trinity College in Cambridge.
