Letter from George Petrie to William Allingham, February 2, 1857
Creator
Petrie, George, 1790-1866
Date
1857-02-02
Description
One letter from Irish antiquarian and painter George Petrie to William Allingham apologizing for not replying sooner, as he was ill with a cold or influenza for a period of time. Petrie states that he has read Allingham's poem several times and it has given him much pleasure. He compares the poem to an old Irish melody, with "antique simplicicity." Petrie offers suggestions in word choice for Allingham's poem "Abbey Assaroe." Petrie confesses he had been unfamiliar with the term "Bore-tree," but looked it up in Skinner's "Etymologicon Linguae Anglicanae," and transcribes the Latin definition. Petrie mentions he is pleased with Mr. Kenyon's decision on the ports, likely talking about politician Lloyd Kenyon. He had not seen a sketch in the Illustrated London News.
