Description
One letter from English writer and critic William Michael Rossetti to William Allingham. Rossetti writes to Allingham as the Honorary Secretary to the Seddon Subscription Fund. Rossetti writes to Allingham in hopes that he will join their cause in raising money to purchase a painting done by the late artist Thomas Seddon, which would be then donated to the Royal Academy. Rossetti also writes that the committee seeks to raise 400 guineas, but would seek to raise more to cover the cost and offer some to Seddon's widow. The members of the fund also will be holding an exhibition of Mr. Seddon's paintings and sketches at the Society of Arts. Rossetti mentions the history of Thomas Seddon, and his paintings of the East and the Holy Land. Seddon traveled with fellow artist William Holman Hunt, to paint the Holy Land in 1854. Rossetti writes that Seddon died of dysentary. Rossetti's letter contains a Memorandum written by Mr. John Ruskin, as well as an accompanying copy of Resolutions by the Seddon Subscription Fund. This accompanying document also includes names of subscribers, and their monetary contribution to the fund.
