Stokes writes that his hair has turned white, and his daughter is now much grown up. He mentions his pleasure at the opportunity to see old friend such as Ormsby, Kebbel, Munby, Burton, S.J. O'Grady, and Burne-Jones. Stokes also mentions that Allingham is the last living Irish poet. Stokes briefly mentions his time in Calcutta. Stokes inquires about Allingham's \"Banshee,\" which he is interested in seeing. He also writes that his current work is taken up by legal and philological work and fears that it is not anything that would interest Allingham. 1 leaf, 4 pages 17.8 x 22.6 cm. eng London (England) Stokes, Whitley, 1830-1909 Personal Correspondence William Allingham Papers Series 1: Correspondence: Sub-series 2: Correspondence to William Allingham; Box 3, Folder 40: Stokes, Whitley to William Allingham, 1857-1861, 1886-1887 Purchased from Ivor L. Stokes encourages Allingham to write to Knowle again and send a copy of the previous letter. Stokes also writes regarding Allingham's poem \"Banshee,\" which he feels he can only offer technical remarks, and proposes several possible changes. Stokes asks that when Allingham finds a day suitable to visit London, that he give Stokes 24 hours notice. Stokes informs Allingham that he is often at the Inner Temple Library, or the Students' Room at the British Museum. 1 leaf, 4 pages 17.8 x 22.6 cm. eng London (England) Stokes, Whitley, 1830-1909 Personal Correspondence William Allingham Papers Series 1: Correspondence: Sub-series 2: Correspondence to William Allingham; Box 3, Folder 40: Stokes, Whitley to William Allingham, 1857-1861, 1886-1887 Purchased from Ivor L. He apologizes to Allingham that he does not know anyone at Trinity College Dublin who \"cares about Art and Poetry and all that.\" He writes that he does not know John Ingram, but mentions his acquaintances John Gwynn and George Ormsby. In a post-script, Stokes informs Allingham that he has included a translation from Wallachia or Rouman, which is a location in Romania, that he hopes Allingham may find interesting. 1 leaf, 4 pages 17.9 x 22.3 cm. eng London (England) Stokes, Whitley, 1830-1909 Personal Correspondence William Allingham Papers Series 1: Correspondence: Sub-series 2: Correspondence to William Allingham; Box 3, Folder 40: Stokes, Whitley to William Allingham, 1857-1861, 1886-1887 Purchased from Ivor L. Stokes writes that Rossetti is working on a commission for a Welsh cathedral, that Ormsby is doing well, and no news from Hannay. Stokes mentions the progress Allingham is making on his work and also mentions the publication the Athenaeum. Stokes writes that he is working on an edition of a law book. Stokes inquires whether Allingham has heard from the Brownings, and mentions the expose on Owen Meredith and George Sand's \"Lavinia.\""]},{"label":"Extent","value":"1 leaf, 2 pages"},{"label":"Dimensions","value":"17.8 x 22.7 cm."},{"label":"Language","value":"English"},{"label":"Geographic Subject","value":"London (England)"},{"label":"Subject","value":"Stokes, Whitley, 1830-1909"},{"label":"Genre Subject","value":"Personal Correspondence"},{"label":"Collection Title","value":"William Allingham Papers"},{"label":"Series","value":"Series 1: Correspondence: Sub-series 2: Correspondence to William Allingham;"},{"label":"Container","value":"Box 3, Folder 40: Stokes, Whitley to William Allingham, 1857-1861, 1886-1887"},{"label":"Rights","value":"No Copyright - United States"},{"label":"Rights Description","value":"This item is in the public domain."},{"label":"Acquisition Information","value":"Purchased from Ivor L.
