Gone West: Preface to the Song: In the terrible war in France and Belgium when a soldier died or fell in battle, his comrades did not say “He is dead.” But “He has gone west.” No one seems to know the reason for the phrase. The following is suggested: To move westward seems to be primal in man. When Abraham and Lot separated, Abraham moved west. The Semetic [sic] race moved west to Palestine. Then came Jesus Christ. The Apostles moved West over Europe the Aegica came into being. The Mexican War moved America West to the Pacific coast, where before it laid between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mississippi River. America moved further west and bought the Sandwich Islands. Then came the Spanish American War, and as by a Divine impulse American moved on to the Phillipines [sic]. The Orient and the Occident, the East and the West, have come together, and at last the world is one, and the civilizations must blend and the world must rise to higher things.
