Lyrics
There’s a Dixie Girl Who’s Longing For a Yankee Doodle Boy Verse: A southern girl was she, A northern boy was he, A ring he fondly placed upon her finger She sighed “When you’re away, just say that night and day, The love-light in your eyes for me will linger. And when the northern girls again you’ve met Don’t let them steal your heart and don’t forget: Refrain: There’s a Dixie girl who’s longing for a Yankee Doodle Boy There’s a Dixie Church that’s waiting Just to ring out bells of joy. Where the Mississippi’s flowing, Where the sweet Magnolia’s growing, There’s a Dixie girl who’s longing for a Yankee Doodle boy. Verse: ‘Tis near a wedding day, The train speeds on its way, A northern boy to Dixie land is going He murmurs “Darling Sue, I’m coming back to you,” The love-light still within his eyes is glowing. He gazes on a new bright wedding ring The wheels go’ round and ‘round and seem to sing: Refrain

Comment
Although this song has been repeatedly classed as a war song by collectors and librarians, its only reference to soldiers is by means of the cover image. It was published in 1911, was only briefly popular, and had largely faded by view by the summer of 1912. Haviland kept publishing new variants until at least late 1913, but there is no indication that it was performed or promoted during the war years.
Historical Note
This is the seventh of seven printings, distinguished by the inset photographs on the cover, the back covers, and advertisements on the inside pages. This printing postdates October 18, 1913, based on the back cover.
