He was a Soldier from the U.S.A. (Fighting for his Native Land.) Verse: On a crowded pier, as the night drew near, Stood a woman bent in years, By a maiden fair, with golden hair, And their eyes were fill’d with tears, A young man press’d them to his breast, And whispered “Have no fear, When the war is through, I’ll return to you, sweetheart and mother dear.” Refrain: He was a soldier from the U.S.A. Fighting for the Native Land He was a soldier boy who sailed away By his country’s flag to stand He left a sweetheart ‘neath the Stars and Stripes, And a mother old and gray They are dreaming tonight, of the battle ground And their boy from the U.S.A. Verse: On a battle ground, near the cannons sound, Lay a dying soldier lad, And a comrade heard, his dying words, To the girl whose love he had, tell her I know she loved me so, Tell mother not to cry, I fought and died, For my country’s pride, And tell the both “Good-bye.” Refrain
