  • Former shelf-mark: MS Q. 387.2 M28b (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library).
  • Origin: Presumably copied in England in 1626 by Ralph Crane.
  • neither conforms precisely to the examples found in Heawood.
  • Watermarks are readily visible on the front fly-leaf (two pillars) and on the first leaf (coat of arms with a crown)
  • Last leaf ruled but blank.
  • Binding: Bound in gold-tooled calf, perhaps 18th-century, with ornamental devices on both covers and remnants of blue silk ties. Includes binding waste from a medieval manuscript fragment (15th-century), used as spine lining. Content suggests that it was a charter or deed. The segment exposed just after the front fly-leaf appears to read: "[...] [et] exitus [et] p[ro]ficua inde p[ro]ven[ientes] p[er]cepit seu h[ab]uit p[er]ceperunt seu h[ab]uerunt [et] compu[tum] inde nondum reddiderunt. Et p[er] sacr[amentu]m eor[um]dem probor[um] [...]" The segment exposed just before the back fly-leaf reads: "Henricus Dei gr[ati]a rex Angl[ie] [et] Ffranc[ie] [et] d[omi]n[u]s Hib[er]n[ie] ... p[er] l[itte]ras suas patent[es] dat[us] [...]"
  • Script: Written in a clear secretary hand.
  • Layout: Frame-ruled in red.
  • Alternative title from the 1644 imprint.
  • Though first printed in 1644 under the title, "Sea-mans Dictionary," this version was copied in 1626 by Ralph Crane (fl. 1589-1632), poet and scrivener to the King's Players. Perhaps the preeminent literary scribe of his era, Crane is supposed to have transcribed several of Shakespeare's plays for the First Folio. This Illinois manuscript is mentioned specifically in Crane's Oxford DNB entry. Principal differences from the 1644 edition: 1. This version sets the alphabetical index before the lexicon, whereas the edition has it at the end of the work -- 2. The imprint has a section immediately following the preface, called, "The State of a Christian: Lively Set Forth by an Allegorie of a Shippe under Sayle," which is lacking in this version -- 3. The manuscript concludes with text that had been omitted from the entry for "beare-off," corresponding to what is found on p. 7 of the edition.
  • Manuscript nautical lexicon of Henry Manwayring (or Mainwaring), containing the first known instances of many terms, even earlier than John Smith's Sea-mans Grammar (first edition: 1626).
