Letter from Coventry Patmore to William Allingham, April 17, 1850
Creator
Patmore, Coventry
Date
1850-04-17
Description
One letter from British poet Coventry Patmore to William Allingham in which Patmore offers his opinion of a poem Allingham had sent, Patmore explains he wanted to wait till he had read the poem a third time before offering criticisms. Patmore writes that the poem will need a lot of work before it will be a quality suitable for publishing. He wants Allingham to know that this might not be what he wanted to hear, but did not want his opinion to come "disguised with soft sodder." Patmore mentions Allingham's poem "The Music Master," which could be the poem he is discussing. Patmore also mentions shared acquaintance Tennyson, who is soon returning to town. Patmore discusses the works of Sidney Yendis, which Patmore describes as a remarkable pseudonym.
