  • Binding: Bound in later grey paper-covered case binding with red leather label on front cover and on spine, with gilt lettering: "Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Du viol, manuscrit autographe".
  • Leaves tipped on to tissue stubs.
  • Date of production suggested by Sénéchal.
  • Final leaf is blank.
  • Layout: Written in 2-24 lines; text in 1 column on right half of pages; some deletions, additions, and changes within text in Dupin's hand.
  • Former shelfmark: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. MS 364.153 R76d.
  • Title transcribed from head of first leaf.
  • Likely written and dictated between 1745 and 1751 when Rousseau served as Dupin's secretary. The article was number 37 of 47, and was to form part of her Ouvrage sur les femmes, which was not published until 2022.
  • Manuscript transcription in the hand of Jean-Jacques Rousseau of a polished draft of Louise Dupin's article Du Viol.
Biographical Note
Louise-Marie-Madeleine Guillaume de Fontaine Dupin (28 October 1706-20 November 1799) was a French intellectual, writer, and saloniste; she owned the Château de Chenonceau, the center of French philosophy in the Age of Enlightenment.
