Description
One letter from English painter Arthur Hughes to Helen Allingham regarding some old letters. Hughes discusses a particular letter sent by William Allingham to Hughes sent from the Crown Inn near Burnham Beeches, sometime around 1856-57. William Allingham wrote a verse in response to a broken engagement between Hughes, the sculptor Alexander Munro, D.G. Rossetti, and Allingham. Hughes expresses his delight in hearing of Helen's new exhibition. In a post-script, Hughes writes that he had introduced William Allingham to Burnham Beeches. Hughes visited some time later to see his "old Rosalind tree," and found another tree with the name "Helen Paterson," carved into it. Hughes references Shakespeare's play "As You Like It," by calling his carving a "Rosalind tree.
