Knox apologizes for not responding to Helen's letter, and mentions that it arrived on the eve of her marriage. Knox mentions trying to send Helen a message via her cousin. Knox discusses Helen's sketches, which did not meet Mr. Straham's taste, but hopes it will not discourage Helen.
