Description | One letter and corresponding envelope from British religious philosopher James Martineau to Helen and William Allingham. Martineau writes that early or late messages of goodwill are always welcome. He also writes that peoples eagerness to congratulate others on their birthday, makes him curious about the pessimistic question of "Is life worth living?" Martineau also refers to himself as an "octogenarian." The accompanying envelope is addressed to William Allingham in Godalming, and is postmarked April 24, 1885. The letter's paper contains a watermark for Ivorite, for the Sandle Bros. company. |
