This promotional pamphlet advertises “America Saved the Day” (copyrighted September 24, 1918) and “Come on Boys, Come on, Over across the Sea,” which was in press at the time. Brown almost certainly printed this flyer in conjunction with the performance at Camp Devens in mid-October 1918 of the first title advertised, the second edition of which was available at C. W. Thompson’s shop in Boston.
Historical Note
The second title advertised, “Come on Boys, Come on, Over across the Sea,” was a recruiting song, so the pamphlet had to be printed before the armistice on November 11. But in the end, that title was never issued; Brown instead replaced the words and retitled the song ““Home Again, Boys, Home Again, Back across the Sea,” which was copyrighted on February 24, 1919.
The typescript indication added to the first page implies that the promotional broadside was published after the first edition but before the second, which included C. W. Thompson on the cover; after the second edition was issued, then, the typescript was added. A second copy of this brochure digitized by Brown University also includes the typescript, although laid out slightly differently.
“Just off the press” does not mean “published by”; White-Smith apparently served as a printer only, not a publisher, for the first edition of this title. Probably “one of the oldest publishing houses in Boston” also refers to White-Smith, which was founded just after the Civil War; C. W. Thompson did not appear until the 1890s.
