Comment | - Park Ave. Hotel 33rd Street & Park Ave.
- John D. McDonald
- McDonald published this song shortly before he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He appears to have been motivated by a desire to support the war effort; there is no indication that he actively promoted the title, nor does it receive any recognition in the press or in trade journals.

Historical Note | The published song was preceded by a very different version copyrighted in manuscript on August 16, 1917, on which Marjorie Monroe is credited as arranger. This is clumsy and and amateurish: the refrain is structurally awkward, the key signature is incorrect, and the tessitura is impractically high. The introduction is altogether different; in fact, only the melody of the first strain and the mutation to the parallel minor appear as presented in the published copy. For the publication, the music was apparently rewritten almost entirely by William M. Redfield, who also made arrangements for orchestra and band that McDonald copyrighted separately. |
Musical Note | A conventional march song, with rat-a-tat-tat fills and occasional fanfare figures and walking bass. The first strain is unusually repetitive, with three of four lines beginning identically; but it also displays somewhat surprising chromatic inflections that take the music briefly into the parallel minor. The refrain somewhat resembles a trio, with more sweeping, varied lines; the final phrase restates once more the opening idea. The lyric somewhat resembles a semi-high-class ballad in its rather exalted language, and possibly that explains some of the musical characteristics in the original manuscript version. |

Lyrics | - [refrain 2]
- [verse 2] So proudly aloft, unsullied and bright, / It shall wave in the great God, given light, / Guiding us on to victries anew, / O’er the powers of darkness and night / And it’s silvery stars and its bright colored bars / o’er the world, in the sunlight shall gleam, / Proclaiming that we, in the Land of the Free, / know what liberty does mean.
- [refrain 1] So we’ll fight for the stars in the blue / And we’ll fight for the bars in it too, / It will wave o’er the land and the sea / Sweet emblem of our liberty / It will wave for the weak and oppressed / It will wave for the poor and distressed / So we’ll fight for the right, and we’ll win in the fight, / For our heaven born flag in heaven was blessed.
- [verse 1] A’ top of the world, in the blue tinted sky, / The silvery stars sparkled with light / The lily white clouds with bright crimson were barred, / As the day passed on into night / Thus our flag it was born in the heavens above / on a day when our country was new. / Inspiring us all, our dear banner to love, / and glorious deeds to do.
