Physical Description
1 score, voice and piano ([1], 2-7, [1] p.)
Comment
Tosti was a celebrated figure, especially in England, and he emerged from retirement to write this song. It had less impact than might be expected, though it was advertised in England and recorded in the United States.
Chappell & Co. Ltd.
50, New Bond Street.
Historical Note
This is the high-voice version of the first of two printings that differ only in the price on the cover. The English words are printed in Roman above the Italian words, printed in Italic. The English text is not an exact translation of the Italian, though the sentiments are similar.
One recording was released, in 1915. Marketing of the sheet music increased after the United States entered the war, especially as an accompaniment for silent films. H. R. Higgs’ arrangement for that purpose survives in the National Library of Australia.
Musical Note
Tosti uses a drumbeat accompaniment throughout this march song (“Tempo di marcia”) in duple meter. A fanfare figure links verse and chorus. Harmony and melody are more straightforward than in many of Tosti’s ballads.

Lyrics
[verse 2] Addio, pensose no mamme che piangete! / Addio, ragazze belle die aspettate! / Suovia, levate il capo e sorridete: / Quaggiù i ragazzi fan le schioppettate. / E sul nemico scroscia la mitraglia / E noi balziamo avanti alla battaglia;
[refrain 2]
English text: [verse 1] Away, away! from northern lake and mountain / From western field and eastern plain advancing, / Away, away! from olive grove and fountain / We march together, our banners bravely dancing. / A greater host ne'er liv'd in song and story, / Allies in hope, in courage and in glory!
[refrain 1] March, march, under Freedom's flag, heroes and brothers / Fight till Justice rules again and wrong is righted, / March, march, under Freedom's flag, heroes and brothers / The vict'ry won, the triumph sure, we stand united!
[verse 2] Away, away, no time for idle sorrow / Though some we cherish far away are lying, / We’ll battle on until that great Tomorrow / When back triumphant we come with colours flying / And rich reward shall crown our high endeavour / For Peace shall bless our homes and hearts for ever.
Italian text: [verse 1] Leviamo le bandiere a tutti i venti / Con i fucili le fanfare e i canti: / Marciam di fronte in dieci reggimenti / Con l'occhio fiso ai nostri comandanti. / Ci vennero le donne a salutare / E partimmo per terra d'oltre mare;
[refrain 1] Sulla fronte portiam l'itala stella / E in cuore il nome della patria bella! / Sulla fronte portiam l'itala stella / E in cuore il nome della patria bella!
Musical Genre
March song
