Comment | Alsace Lorraine and "The Land of My Best Girl," both humorous depictions of a lover beset with divided national loyalties, were written nearly simultaneously, and a controversy ensued about precedence and originality. "Alsace Lorraine" was far less successful, though it was popular enough to be reprinted and issued on piano roll. It had a modest second life in 1915 as an instrumental number. |
Historical Note |
|
Musical Note | This song juxtaposes a ballad-style verse ("Moderato con espressione") in quadruple meter with a march-song refrain ("Marcia") in duple meter. The form is slightly unusual, with a twelve-bar verse and a conventional, thirty-two-bar refrain. Musical features are characteristic of both styles: melodic leaps and chromatic inflections in the verse; walking bass, dotted rhythms and fanfare fills in the refrain. An ossia high note brings the style slightly back towards a ballad at the end. The refrain is built upon the four-note phrase that opens the penultimate line of La Marseillaise ("Marchons, marchons"), quoting it explicitly three times. |
