Interpretation | The Christian Church of Champaign-Urbana was founded in 1883 with only 14 members. The first church was built at 606 E. White Street in 1884. In 1900, the congregation decided to built a bigger church ath the corner of Springfield Avenue and Wright Street. They paid $2,000 for the lot. They sold the old church for $5,000 and with a number of donations were able to build the new church. The new building was dedicated in October 1903. In 1911, a new addition was dedicated and the church was able to seat 800 people. March 6, 1932, the church building was destroyed by fire. The loss was $125,000 but the insurance coverage only amounted to $26,000. Temporary church offices were put in the McKinley Foundation and church services were at Smith Music Hall. A building fund was started for a new church. Several lots to the northwest of the old church were bought. After $75,000 had been raised for the building fund, construction of the new church began and it was dedicated on Palm Sunday, April 5, 1936. 1983 marked the centennial of the University Place Christian Church. In 1952, a building was added for the Illinois Disciple Foundation. It was completed and opened in 1957. |
