Title | University of Illinois Armory |
Description | 505 E. Armory Avenue, Champaign. |
Interpretation | Completed in 1915, the Armory was used as a military drill hall and for large gatherings such as commencement exercises. During World War I, the interior was remodeled to accommodate a huge mess hall on the first floor and sleeping quarters above for over 2,000 men in the Student Army Training Corps. In 1920 memorial trees and plaques were placed around the armory to honor 172 Illini who died in the war. Several trees and a few of the plaques remain. Outer building sections for offices and classrooms were added in 1925-27. |
