| Interpretation | The back of the slide includes the following text: "There are in all 132 of these columns, built of drumshaped sections and arranged in sixteen rows. It is sixty-five feet up to the top of those spreading capitals, and it would take six men with outstretched ares to span one of the sculptured shafts." The name Karnak, derived from a nearby village, refers to a large temple complex in Luxor (ancient Thebes). Karnak was the center of the cult of Amun during the New Kingdom. The Great Hypostyle Hall is situated between the second and third pylons of the temple complex. It was decorated by Sety I and Ramses II. |
