Description | Poster, color, 19.75 x 29.75 in., printed by Thomas Forman Ltd., Nottingham, England. |
Interpretation | In order to be ready for any type of war the Royal Air Force (RAF) was built on the twin premises of flexibility and quality. They concentrated on training a small groups of exceptional fliers, reserve officers, and even mechanics. Priority was given to the development of fighter planes and advanced radiolocation (as radar was then known). In 1939 Britain was the only country in the world with a practical system of radiolocation in operation. During the Battle of Britain the RAF was sometimes outnumbered ten to one by German planes. However, the superior quality and training of the RAF pilots helped them to destroy 2225 enemy aircraft, during August and September of 1940, while losing only 616 fighters. |
