Interpretation | Butler grew up in rural Iowa knowing that he wanted to be an artist and admiring the tradition of midwestern landscapes. He consistently favors sweeping, expansive vistas that draw the viewer's attention to the state of the human relationship with the environment, especially the order Man imposes on the land through the geometric patterns of farming. There is an underlying sense of calm to his works, and a sense of the heroic qualities of Nature. Butler offers a panoramic or wide view, even in small scale works, that suggests the way a person at the actual site might by turning their head to look at different parts of the setting. This gives Butler's work a sense of movement through space. And although the work is realistic, the artist is more interested in the character of the place he depicts than he is in the specific details of it. |
