Title | Water Vapor Turbine |
Description | This water vapor turbine has two sets of horizontal spiral glass tubes connected by three straight vertical tubes and two glass globes. The small turbine is located in the top globe. |
Interpretation | This device uses the evaporation of water to power a small turbine. Invented by George H. Gibson, it was displayed at A Century of Progress, Chicago’s World’s Fair of 1933-1934. The upper coils are cooled by the evaporation of water from the surrounding wick. The resulting lower temperature causes water vapor inside the coils to condense. This reduces the pressure and forces the vapor past the turbine wheel, making the wheel turn. |
