Title | Champaign City Building, Champaign, Illinois |
Description | 102 N. Neil St., Champaign. Art Deco design elements are prominent in this 1949 view. |
Interpretation | The building, partially funded by federal PWA funds, was begun in 1935 during the Great Depression. In May 1937 the fire department moved into its new quarters, but lack of funds for furnishings delayed full occupancy until October. Government growth resulted in separate new buildings for the fire department in 1967 and the police department in 1983. The city building was rededicated in 1988 following extensive remodeling and a third floor addition to the east. |
