Title | Memorial Stadium, Champaign, Illinois |
Description | 200 E. Florida Ave., Champaign. |
Interpretation | A 1911 campus plan proposed a stadium at what was then the most logical place, Illinois Field. In 1922 trustees approved the present 40-acre site, thereby marking the southwest campus as the center for future athletic activities. Funded by contributions, pledges of $100 entitled the donor to one good seat in the stadium for ten years or two good seats for five years. Designed by Holabird and Roche, and constructed in 1922-24 by the construction company, English Brothers, the stadium was a memorial to students who had died in World War I. |
