Descriptive Information
Title | Settee, built specially for Abraham Lincoln |
Coverage-Year | 1850/1860 |
Description | Hardwood brown painted bench with arm rests, shaped seat and slightly curved backrest designed for comfort. Simple design on backrest resembles Windsor chairs. It is 81" long, 20" wide, and 32" high. |
Interpretation | Supposedly built extra long for Mr. Lincoln to be able to stretch out on it, the bench was located on the south, or back, porch at the Lincoln Home. The bench was painted the same color as the Lincoln Home and retains its many original layers of paint. The bench was made by a Springfield chairmaker. |
