Title
Schoenheider Standing Mallard Drake Ice Decoy
Description
A standing mallard duck ice decoy with a painted two part body, glass eyes and supported by a single iron leg with splayed foot. The head is green with a long yellow beak, the body is painted brown with PEORIA CS stencilled on the bottom in black paint. The wood is cypress or white pine. Dimensions are 13-1/4" h x 5-5/8" with The length from tail to tip of beak is 18".
Interpretation
  • Four generations of Schoenheiders have been enthusiastic waterfowl hunters. Charles Schoenheider, Sr., a carpenter and cabinet maker, hunted waterfowl for the market in both spring and fall. He is considered one of the five most talented decoy carvers in Illinois. He probably carved 3,000 decoys over a fifty year period, making nearly all the ducks common to the Illinois River region. He typically used cypress for his ducks, but also utilized cedar and white pine. Schoenheider made twelve mallard and twelve pintail standing ice and field decoys for his personal use in 1910
  • this example is one of only four known to survive with the original paint. The metal leg was cast from a wooden model that Schoenheider carved. When heated over a small fire, it would be set onto and melt the ice on the river or pond keeping it upright.
