Description | On Front: Otago, Vassar, HHPA. On Back: Otago University, Dunedin, N.Z. Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY. Recently completed academic libraries for two campuses over 10,000 miles apart are examples of HHPA's international experience in designing innovative, modern library spaces as well as integrating new technologies into historic campus libraries. The Information Services Building at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, adds 120,000 s.f. to an existing 80,000 s.f. library and links it to the university's student union to create a 24-hour information marketplace. The three-story, 400,000 volume library houses new media facilities, instructional technologies, electronic classrooms, computer clusters, as well as reading rooms, library collection storage, staff areas, an indoor plaza for student gatherings, study niches with electronic connections, and total seating for 1,700. The new ISB is now complete while construction continues on the enclosed link with the student union. When finished, the old and new structures will form an integrated and harmonious center for student life and research. The renovation and 30,000 s.f. expansion of the 150,000 s.f. Martha Rivers and E. Bronson Ingram Library at Vassar College adds clarity of organization and space for its 775,000-volume collection; provides access to new technologies; and offers areas for social interaction. Improvements include electronic facilities for research and teaching; enhanced reference and reader services; networked computer workstations; special-collections archives; group study/viewing rooms; more than 85 faculty studies; additional reading rooms and lounges; an exterior courtyard with network connections and movable seating; and seating for approximately 1,000. HHPA is an award-winning architecture, planning and interior design firm with officies in New York and Los Angeles, with projects spanning over 60 academic campuses and 3 million s.f. of library space. HHPA is currently designing academic libraries at the University of Miami, Georgia College and State University, University of California San Diego and Soka University of America.
