Title | Winged Liberty Head Dime |
Description | Liberty is shown in a winged cap. The dime reads "In God We Trust." The date and "LIBERTY" also appear. This dime was also called the Mercury Dime. |
Interpretation | The Winged Liberty Head Dime was minted from 1916-1945. An act of Congress April 11, 1864, authorized the coinage of two cent coins, which were the first to have the motto, "In God We Trust." The motto was omitted from coins in 1907, causing a loud protest. An act of Congress May 1908 made it mandatory on all coins and currency, and on July 30, 1956, "In God We Trust" became the national motto of the United States. It has been challenged inthe courts, but rejected, and the Supreme Court has refused to review it. Source: http://www.religioustolerance.org/nat_mott.htm |

Source | A copper box was placed in the Champaign City Building when it was built in 1889. The box contained some small articles and documents, including some coins. When a new Champaign City Building was dedicated in 1938, additional articles were added to the box and it was placed behind a bronze plaque in the new lobby. This coin was one that was added. In 1998, the box was retrieved and the contents examined. Some of the items will be returned to a time capsule to be placed in the city building. |
