Title | Two Nickels, Obverse and Reverse: no date |
Description | The reverse reads "United States of America," and has a number "5" and "cents." There are thirteen stars for the colonies. The other coin shows a wreath with an indefinable shape in the middle, possibly a shield. All else has been worn off. |
Interpretation | The first nickel five cent coin was a shield type struck in 1866. It was 3/4 copper and 1/4 nickel. The shield type was replaced by the Liberty Head or "V" nickel in 1883. These coins have an Arabic number five instead of a Roman numeral "V," so they probably were minted between 1866 and 1883. |

Source | These coins came from a copper box placed in the Champaign City Building when it was built in 1889. The box contained some small articles and documents. When a new Champaign City Building was dedicated in 1938, additional articles were added to the box and it was placed behind a bronze plaque in the new lobby. In 1998, the box was retrieved adn the contents examined. Some of the items will be returned to a time capsule to be placed in the city building. |
