  • Origin: Copied in Italy in the mid-15th century, most likely for a community of Augustinian nuns, based on the following evidence: 1. Reference to Augustine as "patris nostri" in the title, indicating an Augustinian context -- 2. The presence of vernacular translation -- 3. The consistent feminization of the language of the text: e.g. at 1r, the opening quotation changes "fratres carissimi" to "sorores carissime," while at 46v, the Rule's quotation of 1 John 3:15 is changed from "Qui odit fratrem suum..." to "Que odit sororem suam...."
  • Cattle head watermark present in the paper, though it does not conform to any particular example in Briquet.
  • Last leaf blank.
  • Imperfections: Missing leaves between fol. 46 and 47, with missing text corresponding to PL, 176, cols. 913B-914B. Missing initial "A" at 1r.
  • Binding: Bound in limp paper.
  • Decoration: Rubrication throughout: Text of Augustine's Rule itself is rubricated in both the original Latin and in the Italian translation, as are paragraph marks. The last gathering has different, much fainter, red ink.
  • Script: Written in a variety of humanistic hands of the 15th century, the most distinctive being found in the last gathering (i.e. fol. 47r-57v).
  • Layout: Written in two columns, 27-35 lines; last gathering in 41-43 lines. Frame-ruled in dry-point.
  • Main title from fol. 1r; alternative titles from colophon at 57v, and from edition in Patrologia Latina.
  • The Latin text corresponds to the version found in PL, 176, cols. 881A-924D.
  • Manuscript codex of Hugh of Saint-Victor's exposition of the Rule of St. Augustine, with the original Latin text interspersed with Italian translations of both the Rule and the accompanying commentary.
