Centennial Coin, 1889
Description
Profile of George Washington, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and IN GOD WE TRUST below. There is a hole near the top edge.
Interpretation
This coin commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of the United States. The Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia September 1787, with delegates from twelve states. Rhode Island did not send a representative, fearing a strong central government. Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry also chose not to attend. The Constitution was officially ratified July 26, 1788, and the first Congress convened in New York City in September 1789. One of the last acts of the Constitutional Convention was to arrange for the first election, which was held March 4, 1789. George Washington was unanimously elected President April 30, 1789. This coin bears his likeness. It was probably not put into circulation. The hole probably offered a way to thread it and wear it as a patriotic symbol.

These coins came from a copper box placed in the Champaign City Building when it was built in 1889. The box contained some small articles and documents. When a new Champaign City Building was dedicated in 1938, additional articles were added to the box and it was placed behind a bronze plaque in the new lobby. In 1998, the box was retrieved and the contents examined. Some of the items will be returned to a time capsule to be placed in the city building.
