| Interpretation | Transcription of page 1: 1st Div 1st AC Hospital near Culpeper [Pa] Sept 2[9]th 1863 My Dear Jones Your very welcome letter was duly recieved yesterday. I have often wondered what had become of you; and I am very sorry to learn that you have been so long a suferer with so poor a chance for a complete recovery and restoration to perfect health[.] I trust fortune will again soon smile on you and drive away the heavy affliction which has been weighing you down so long & I may be able to see you again in Uncle Sams Service assisting us in relieving the dul monotony of camp life. I have seen and experienced a good deal of the realities of wr since I saw you last[.] Our march from Falmouth through Maryland and into Pa was a very sever one; we often made 30 miles a day; one day we made 24 miles from 12m to 9 P.M. but that time out Brgade was left behind to guard the wagon grain from Frederick to Emettsburg. Our corps came into Gettysburg just as the enemy were approaching the town with about 60 000 men; they were driving the cavalry and flying artillery before them when our Division [continues on p. 2] |
