Description | The Voyage of Life - Youth. Artist's print by Thomas Cole. Engraved by James Smillie and published in Boston by L.A. Elliot, 322 Washington St. Poem stanza is found on each side of the title. Scene depicts an angel waving farewell to youth in gondola-type vessel. Youth looks to celestial palace in the sky. Interpretation | Taken from an original Cole painting that was part of a series depicting the various stages of life in an allegorical fashion. A later photo of Lincoln's bedroom shows the first print in the series ("Voyage of Life-Childhood") on the wall but it was not available so another in the series was acquired. |
