Interpretation | The Vichy regime was the French government established after the German forces occupied France in June 1940. It was headed by Marshal Philippe Petain until it was destroyed by the liberation of France by the Allied forces in August 1944. The Vichy regime governed southern France and cooperated with the German occupation in the north of France. They did much to help the Germans persecute the Jews, as well as taking anti-Jewish actions on their own initiative. By the end of World War II, France had deported about 76,000 Jews (including 12,000 children) to concentration camps. About 2500 of these deportees survived. |
