One letter from British ophthalmologist Priestly Smith to Helen Allingham, congratulating Helen on her engagement, and mentions discussing the news with their cousin Mary. Smith expresses his hope Helen will not give up her profession after being married. Smith writes being engaged is nothing compared to being married, and hopes for Helen's happiness. Smith informs Helen his wife, Louisa, will write to Helen on her own. Helen writes a note on the last page, "My cousin, very eminent oculist," and signs her initials H.A.
