This date is generally taken as the beginning of the Historic Period within the state. Between 1673 and 1832, the following tribes inhabited the state at one time or another: Illiniwek, Miami, Wea, Pankashaw, Fox, Sauk, Kickapoo, Mascouten, Delaware, Shawnee, Ottawa, Potawatomi, and Winnebago.
