Comment | Frances-Clifford made a dutiful effort to promote this title, with at least one trade advertisement and an arrangement for orchestra, but it seems never to have caught on. In an interview in mid-July 1918 the company claimed to have issued a second edition, but there is no evidence of that; nor are there traces of any performances other than by the composer. |
Historical Note | This appears to have been the only printing, despite the publisher’s claim to have issued a second edition; and no piano rolls or recordings have been found. Only one performance is documented, by the composer, on October 1, 1917. Quite possibly Dolen wrote his song shortly after the United States entered the war, or after he himself registered for the draft, on June 5, 1917. Though no copyright was registered, the publication by Frances-Clifford must have appeared in the three weeks between April 25, 1918, when copyright was registered for the music advertised on the back cover, and May 15, when it itself was listed in an advertisement. |
Musical Note | This march song, marked “March Moderato” but marketed in its instrumental form as a one-step, makes use of occasional walking bass, rat-a-tat-tat rhythms, and passing chromaticism, but it is most noteworthy for its extensive and skilful use of musical quotations: “America” and “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp” (both with the original words); and the “Stars and Stripes Forever,” “Yankee Doodle” and “Dixie” (repeatedly), in passing or as fill. |
