| Description | One letter from British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace to William Allingham thanking Allingham for sending a copy of Allingham's poem on Ireland, likely Allingham's "Laurence Bloomfield in Ireland." Wallace notes that Allingham understands the inequity of the Agent's rule and the treatment of the "free" people in Ireland. Wallace also mentions that for the time it was written, Allingham's poem was too advanced. He writes that the "land-question," is the "root of all wretchedness and famine." Wallace encloses for Allingham the Rules and Programmes of the "Land Naturalism Society," in hopes that Allingham may become a subscriber. Wallace offers his congratulations of the season to Allingham and Mrs. Allingham. The letter's paper contains a watermark for The Rutland Note, with an image of a crown. |
