Title | Chattanooga, from the North |
Description | Reproduction of a black and white photograph of Chattanooga from the north. Source: Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, Embracing Scenes of the Occupation of Nashville, the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, the Campaign of Atlanta, March to the Sea, and the Great Raid through the Carolinas. New York, 1866. Dimensions: 8"x10". |
Interpretation | On a peninsula formed beneath the shadow of Lookout Mountain by the sinuous course of the Tennessee river is located the town of Chattanooga, which was occupied by the Army of the Cumberland immediately after the fierce battle of Chickamauga in September, 1863. The position, naturally strong, was at once fortified by the construction of forts, connected by carefully laid-out lines of rifle-pits extending to the river bank above and below the town.
