Description | This sketch shows a protest meeting of Grangers shown in the History of the Grange Movement. |
Interpretation | Disputes arose between farmers and railroads over discrepencies in grain prices and taxes paid for the railroads. Protest meetings never rose to this level in McLean County, Illinois, but a Supreme Court decision, The People v. Chicago and Alton Railroad, ruled that states could have some control over railroads. |
Inscription | A protest meetings of Grangers shown in History of the Grange Movement, a book widely circulated in the country. Things never quite reached this stage in McLean County. (MCHS) |
