Title | Slide, Magic Lantern |
Description | Rectangular glass slide with four handpainted figures: a jockey riding a bucking rabbit, a man in a top hat, waistcoat and carrying an umbrella riding on a crow, a military man with a sword and tufted helmet riding a frog, and a farmer with a pitchfork riding a rooster. |
Interpretation | Magic Lanterns were projectors which made a small, handpainted image project on a large screen. Shows were held in theatres; children had toy magic lanterns as well. The absurd combination of distinguished gentlemen and oversized animals was meant to be amusing and silly. |
