- Written in Ottawa, Illinois on August 22, 1858, a day after the Lincoln-Douglas debate. Joseph Cunningham (1830-1917), who moved to Urbana, Ill., in 1853, published the Urbana Union, 1853-58, and was a delegate to the 1856 Republican state convention in Bloomington. He was also a lawyer, county judge, writer on various legal and local subjects, and a member of the Board of Trustees of Illinois Industrial University, 1867-73.
