| Interpretation | Text on the back of the slide reads, "From our point of view, the vast mass of this hoary monument seems almost to overwhelm us. The eye follows the great blocks of stone upward until they seem to dwindle in the distance into one mountainous bulk, rising ever higher until it reaches the far-off peak. It is the very embodiment of the spirit of ancient Egypt, mysterious and impressive. Cheops, or Khufu, the Pharaoh who built the Great Pyramid, is believed to have lived between 3969 and 3908 B.C. According to the Greek historian, Herodotus, Cheops closed the temmples, abolished sacrifices, and compelled the people of Egypt to quit their regular occupations and to work on his monument in relays of 100,000 men every three months. |
