Title | University of Illinois Foellinger Auditorium, Urbana, Illinois |
Description | 709 S. Mathews Street, Urbana. |
Interpretation | Architect C.H. Blackall conferred with Olmsted Brothers, famed Boston landscape architects, to develop the University of Illinois' first campus plan. He sited the 1907 auditorium on a rise that defined the main campus quadrangle's southern axis. The state's appropriation did not allow for the complete development of the building, which was plagued with acoustical problems. These were solved in 1985 when a $3 million gift from Helene R. Foellinger, for whom the building was renamed, funded an addition and extensive remodeling. |
